Kitty Pryde in the Dragonriders of Pern by Theamat Kitty Pryde in the Dragonriders of Pern by Theamat
This week's The Line it is Drawn features comic book characters in science fiction stories, in honor of Ray Bradbury. My pick was Kitty Pryde visiting the Dragonriders of Pern.

See the other great tributes here!

Thanks for the info! I'll have to look that up. I'd like to have the first appearance of Lockheed in my comics collection....

Maybe it's because I just saw Prometheus, but this really reminds me one of my favorite scenes in Aliens -- with Kitty as Ripley finding all those eggs. But Lockheed makes it funny, on top of scary.

And this must be why she wasn't at the school when it was bombed last week!

I wish I had a word balloon fir kitty! "ummm, I think we missed the kitchens..." lol. This was just a fun piece. I like to keep things simple sometimes.

I don't think anyone can see a room full of eggs and NOT think of aliens! Lol. How was Prometheus? All it's hyped up to be?

It was one of those movies I had heard too much about how good it was -- it wasn't phenomenal; but when I go back later and look at it again, it will be pretty good.

And I think Lockheed said all that needed to be said -- based on my rusty understanding of alien dragon, "Oh, s***" is a fairly accurate translation.

I forgot kitty had a dragon, you never see it outside the comics so it gets hard to remember these things when you don't read the comics, but i do remember my sister showing me a picture of kitty and her dragon

She sure does. I don't know where she GOT the dragon, though. In the astonishing x-men, lockheed is a spy! Lol

A very good series, especially when Joss Whedon was writing it -- it's still an ongoing, but I haven't read it in a while now -- AvX bores me to tears.

Marvel's big current event -- Avengers vs. X-Men. Just one big stupid noisy fight after another.

They are good books, read them when I was very young. But they're a little (ahem... dare I say it) girly. It's a different world from snow crash and stranger in a strange land!

Could be good for a change of pace... I've read six Stephen King's books in a row, so something lighter might help my brain...

Well, if you want a recommendation on the books.... Start in the middle with First Fall. Has more science in the fiction and explains how the people came to be on the planet. Then go to the first set of dragon flight, dragon quest and the white dragon. The books written by Anne herself are pretty old, but her son is continuing the series. I haven't read any of those, so I cant venture an opinion.

It was an interesting week - I did not remember how much science fiction I read as a teenager until I saw the list!

Oh, yes... they surprised me with the Snow Crash suggestions... but I was hoping a bit more variety, seems they get the same reading list in high school... (at least it wasn't like in MY high school, when every time I said I read Science Fiction, the answer was: oh, Jules Verne...)

Thanks for the recommendation... a shame they closed the Borders megastore in San Diego, I was really looking forward every year during the SDCC to a couple hours of browsing there. Oh, well, Amazon delivers.

Now I guess I should devote some time to Britta and Annie...

I've never read the McCaffery books, but I definitely remember the cover art. You did a beautiful job with this 'Thea, I love how shiny and jewel like the dragon turned out.

I remember the coverart fondly as well. Though I was always perplexed as to why the Dragonsinger trilogy depicted the fire-lizards with only four limbs (two legs two wings) instead of the six McCaffery wrote about.

Wonderful artwork Theamat.

That jeweled dragon was what I spent the most time tweaking on this. I remember the books well and the dragon descriptions are pretty specific about the jewel tones. Thanks for noticing!
