Deviant Art - Month 8

Journal Entry: Sun Jan 30, 2011, 8:52 AM
.:Thea's Cogitations
Comic book penciler and sociologist.

Well, another month gone by and I have to say, I've had a pretty crappy three months behind me, professionally speaking.  That has NOTHING to do with the guys I'm working with, they've been so patient with me.  It's the fact that I took on three projects.  That was colossally stupid of me.  I just don't know what I was thinking when I said yes, not once, not twice, but THREE TIMES.  I guess I thought "they're only 5 pages/12 pages long, what harm can it do?"

ALOT of harm.  Firstly, when I'm working one book, I feel guilty for the other two guys.  That's on me, totally.  Secondly, you really can't give all of your creative attention to multiple projects unless you've been doing one of them for a while because doing things creatively requires a certain amount of research.  Penciling has more to do with just drawing pretty pictures.  It's about research, development, planning, filling the subconscious with images and media that are conducive to the creative process.  And when you're doing that over three projects, things get very muddled and confused, unless your some kind of savant or something.  Hell, even a savant is somewhat single minded.  When I started two of the projects last year, it was slow, but not impossible.  But after finishing one project, I was on a high!  I was Supergirl.  And now, I find myself in the crunch, three projects deep, all of them good projects... and attention split beyond recognition.

Adding to my frustration with my work, I haven't been keeping up with media such as the DA, CBR, Newsarama and such.  I'm on the computer enough, but I kept running over to Facebook to play some games and socialize.  Bad idea guys.  Very true, I needed SOME form of down time, but it was at the expense of productivity, and that I just can't have.

That being said, past is past.  I've spoken to my current working partners, and assuming they'll still have me, I'm going to redouble my efforts to get my work in on time and not micromanage ever single panel.  Starting now, this is a rededication to a craft that I want to master.  I'm going to be taking on more media based web surfing in hopes of rekindling the spark that led me down the road of comic book penciling in the first place.  I'm going to catch up on my reading and really concentrate my attention.

I have to allow myself some compassion.  I work a demanding, commission based job from 9-5, and when I get home, I'm mentally and physically exhausted.  I also miss my family and sometimes, you just want to sit with them and enjoy some quality time.  However, that's not any excuse for my lack of production.  I want to go on public record to my writers in stating my apologies.  I've been very Yin in my compassion to myself.... Time for some Yang (tough love).  ::::smack, smack::::: :stupidme:

In the future, I will only be doing one job at a time.  Lesson, quite painfully, learned.

Namaste
Thea

Deviant Art - Month 6

Journal Entry: Sun Nov 28, 2010, 10:38 AM

Comic book penciler and sociologist.

So, been working on and off on pages and artwork this month, still behind on my self imposed deadlines, but I'm learning every day.  For example, I'm going to try to take a less linear approach to my page count.  I was reading about Jim Lee and Sylvestri, or maybe it was Scott Campbell -  their approach is to just do whatever pages come to them first in their minds (and consequently, their fingers). It's tricky, I would be doing alot of splashes, as those are usually very solid in my mind.  And I would have to send pages out of sequence to the writers, sometimes do repeat panels.  However, I think that, in the long run, it would be much more fun to do things that way.

Reading more on cinematography and panel layout this week.  I'm attempting at least one hour's worth of study every day.

I've gotten away from actually reading comics the past few months, things have been so busy.  Nothing an early New Years Resolution can't cure.  From here on out, I'll try to read one comic a day, regardless of what I'm doing - currently reading the Infinity Gauntlet, because the story has been running on the Super Hero Squad.  I love that show.

Thing that is currently kicking my ass?  Perspective.  I just can't seem to get a handle on it.  It's not so much that I don't understand it, horizon line goes to camera's line of site, one point, two point, three point - I just have trouble placing the lines on paper in order to make the picture I wanted to in the first place.  Horizon line low for worms eye, high for birds eye... and then there's simple proportion.  I'm horrible at placing things in proportion.

I have a few books on the shelf for learning perspective, but I think I need a hands on approach to learning.  Any of you guys out there who have mastered the technique of perspective, feel free to pass along your sage-like expertise here.  I already have plenty of books.  What I need is a website or something that SHOWS someone drawing the perspective lines, so that I can SEE what to do.  This is where I get stuck every time!  I have a page and I don't have any idea how you guys build a grid inside a panel and make it all look so cool.  I've gone to a few youtube files online, but they're either very simplistic one points of cities or they're drawn to music...fun to watch, but not very informative in regards to scale.

Honestly, I think if I can just nail perspective down, I can manage my pages much faster.

Ok, so the past few months, I've been absent from the DA.  Mostly because I'm feeling the crunch of having to produce so much work.  I love it, but I get depressed sometimes at my speed.  Of course, that just makes it harder to produce work; it's a lovely, vicious little cycle that I've produced for myself!  But with all hard work, there are rewards.  I've met so many great people, PATIENT people who are constantly telling me not to apologize for my speed.  And they like the work to boot.

I do plan on posting more artwork soon, just need to get some projects closer to completion so that I can start taking out my pencils and 'playing' again.

I've also signed up for the Miami Book Fair www.miamibookfair.com/ 'Women in comics' seminar coming this November. One of the artists there will be Amanda Conner, who I've been following for a while.  Her artwork keeps getting better and better.  Pick up Power Girl or better yet, the first issue of Wonder Woman with the new costume that recently came out.  She's got a cute story in that issue.

I'm currently reading "Framed Ink" which is not a book on inking, but layout.  I'm terrible with layout and I wrack my brain trying to figure it out, what camera angle, the perspective, the whole business.  I DREAM layout these days.  I solved two pages by just sleeping on it.  But it's hard to be patient with the process of creativity.  I'm used to instant results.

Here's a link to the book, if you're interested in study - www.amazon.com/Framed-Ink-Draw…

Till next month, hopefully with artwork in tow!

Deviant Art - Month 3

Comic book penciler and sociologist.

It's been GRUELING this month, I've been working on my very first 22 page one shot commission while still maintaining a full time job and contemplating a second project with Marvel 2.0 that I'm also very excited about.  I never thought that I would be this busy - or this tired.  I'm not sure if it's the pace that I'm working or just the hours of concentration - but I seem to be taking more naps at odd times.  Any professionals out there, please weigh in, do you ever catch up on sleep?  I mean, I don't even have a deadline and I'm still feeling like I'm under the gun!

I got a first look a fully inked page of my new project.  I'm very excited about this, mostly because I am a born pessimist and I still need to give myself pep talks all of the time.  I keep thinking this very nice writer will be emailing me any day now to tell me to throw in the towel.  But, so far so good, he's been very kind and supportive.  I really hope that the future brings more cooperative projects like the one I'm on now. I wish I could post more on Deviant Art, but there is so little time at the end of the day.  My fingers are starting to get a hard edge from holding the pencil and my elbow is stiff.  Occupational hazards, I guess!

And my friends keep asking me to go to movies and such.  What? Social life?  Are you kidding me?!?  I've got stuff to do y'all!  But duty calls,  my son, daughter and husband are all working at scripts to break into the screenwriting business and I have to show my support some how.  BTW, if you haven't seen Inception yet, GO SEE IT!  Good movie, one of the best I've seen in a while.  And I hate going to the movies.

Thanks to everybody who's watching, the support is very much appreciated!  I've had over 1,000 hits on the DA since opening my account in May.  I had never hoped for so much, but here we are, month three, still going strong.  I will be posting SOMETHING at some point this month, as soon as my hands are free, to keep the hits coming.

Signing off till next month, tired but happy!

Namaste
Thea

PS - Special thanks to Daniel and Jonathan for keeping my comic book pencilling hopes alive!  You guys rock.

Guess who got a scanner today!!!  I'm very happy with what I've put up so far.  I've just about run out of material, so from here on in, anything I put up will be new and fresh.

Devian Art - Month 1

Journal Entry: Tue May 25, 2010, 11:43 AM
.:Thea's Cogitations
Comic book penciler and sociologist.

So, I've gone through the effort of starting my very own deviant art page this month and I have to say it's been a good experience for me so far.  I have not been able to post any new work because of a lack of scanning tech at home, but that will shortly be resolved.

It's a terrifying experience, putting up artwork.  Every artist that I know hates their own work, is never satisfied with a particular line or shading technique.  I'm no different, although I can honestly say, I am my worst critic.  Still, this type of venue is good for me.  It teaches me to just put myself out there, whether I like the work or not, and get feedback.  It has encouraged me to draw more this past month than I have in the past year.  And, I can really see some improvement in my methodology.

Some books that have helped me over this 3 year process:

Force: Dynamic life drawing for animators
www.amazon.com/Force-Dynamic-D…

Vanishing Point: Perspective from the ground up
www.amazon.com/Vanishing-Point…

Working Methods
www.amazon.com/Working-Methods…

Those are just a few from many books I've purchased, but I'll post more as I go along.  If you know of any other books you think might be helpful, leave a comment.
